Try to wrap your mind around this. Nasa now has this new antenna for its satellites that looks like a paperclip glued to a cable port bought at RadioShack. So what right? Well, the antenna was designed by a network of 37 computers running an evlolving algorithm, which means that this was a bred and evolved design done only by a computer. How does this virtual designer work? Roughly, the system is given a set of specs, it then proceeds to build virtual prototypes, test them, evaluate the tests, and then rebuild them to make them better. It can also cross pollenate the products to improve them, breeding the good parts of two different designs to make a better one. In a month the system could run through millions of variations to find which one is genetically the best fit for the problem. Beyond the fact that this is amazing, it raises the question, are designers obsolete? Could the program be told to design a shoe for a given market, pricepoint, and gender and then nail it in a month? AI Designed Antenna |
